This September (18–25), Fantastic Fest marks its 20th anniversary at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar with a lineup that’s horrifying in all the best ways. Between world premieres, revived cult classics, and genre-curated oddities, Austin’s festival of all that’s wonderfully weird (and weirdly wonderful) once again delivers a smorgasbord of bold programming. Let’s eat!
Our most-anticipated picks…
Dracula (Radu Jude)
According to the festival organisers, this film unfolds across “14 chapters and over the course of three hours,” and famously “holds nothing back, especially genitalia.” Locarno sources describe it as a surreal, AI‑infused satire that recontextualises vampire myths within modern absurdity.
Shelby Oaks (U.S. Premiere)
The U.S. premiere of NEON’s feature from Chris Stuckmann is as buzzy as they come, with viewers already said to be scrambling for tickets.
Sirât (U.S. Premiere)
The U.S. premiere of Oliver Laxe’s desert-bound drama, Sirat wowed the crowds at Cannes and looks set to repeat the trick at Austin.
Mother of Flies — “A mournful, mossy spell of grief and devotion in the Adams Family’s return-to-form witchy cancer drama,” as we put it in our four-star review.
V/H/S/Halloween — We said it offers “a bold roster of directors,” including Paco Plaza and Alex Ross Perry, wrapped in a Halloween-night anthology concept. We can’t wait for that Perry segment!
Reflection in a Dead Diamond (Texas Premiere)
This “stylish blast of Euro hyper‑pulp” from Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani (The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears) focuses on an ageing super-spy recounting his past life.
The Strangers – Chapter 2 (World Premiere)
Festival organisers list this as another eagerly awaited world premiere – we listed it as one of our “70 Most Anticipated Horror Movies of 2025.” Allegedly subjected to heavy reshoots in response to internet sleuths working out the plot. That may or may not be true, but we’re fascinated to see how the filmmakers tackle the task of keeping this reboot fresh and unpredictable!
Black Phone 2 (World Premiere)
Also highlighted by the festival and our Anticipated list, this sequel joins the crop of premiere-bound titles. The original famously won “best film” at Fangoria’s Chainsaw Awards, so it definitely has its fans – and the trailer to this one features whats seems to be a loving homage to Curtains, so our interest is piqued!
Restorations and Rediscoveries
Angel’s Egg (U.S. Premiere, 4K Restoration)
We previously dubbed it “maybe the greatest anime ever made that isn’t called Akira,” “a phantasmagorical voyage” and “utterly sublime.”
Freaked (World Premiere, 4K Restoration)
Alex Winter and Tom Stern’s 1994 cult comedy, about a vain actor transformed into a sideshow mutant, was a big hit at Celluloid Screams last year – and now it’s been restored in 4K, an upgrade that’s making its premiere here at Fantastic Fest.
Other standout restorations in the festival’s archival spotlight include fan favourites Bride of Re‑Animator and Hide and Go Shriek.
The Wider Field
The lineup stretches across bold genre terrain: Sisu: Road to Revenge; The Tree of Knowledge; Berlinale hit The Ice Tower (directed by Lucile Hadžihalilović and featuring a very meta cameo from her husband Gasper Noe as a film director); and Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon (New Zealand/Canada).
Meanwhile Burnt Ends, Fantastic Fest’s sidebar dedicated to micro-budget outlier cinema, is back for its third year with an animation block that features the world premieres of the stop-motion masterpiece The Shrine of Abominations from Skinner & Ross Kennedy, a hand drawn wonder Animal Math from Robbie C. Ward, the comedic Girl’s Night Out from Ashley Sengstaken, world premieres of the horror comedy Theater is Dead, and the inventive thriller Dinner to Die For and Tie Man, a pulpy, offbeat crime thriller.
Meanwhile, festival organisers also schedule an opening-night medieval-metal set by Castle Rat, a Masters of Horror reunion with Mick Garris, Don Coscarelli, and Ernest Dickerson, a fundraiser for the Transgender Film Center (go go trans rights!), and the return of favourite features like Fantastic Debates and the Fantastic Feud.
It looks like another sublime lineup of blood-and-dreams-infused genre mayhem; we can’t wait.
Fantastic Fest 2025 runs September 18–25 in Austin, Texas.
