The 25: Whitlock & Pope’s Most Anticipated Films of 2014 – #25-11

15. Transcendence (April 18 US/April 25 UK)

Transcendence is cinematographer Wally Pfister’s directorial debut, and frequent collaborator Christopher Nolan–yep, Wally’s responsible for the hypo-saturation in those Batman movies–is producing the film, and based on the trailer it looks ambitious and interesting. They couldn’t get Hans Zimmer to compose this one, so we might not get those sci-fi horn blares after all. Maybe they’ll go for something inspired by the genius of Harold Faltermeyer.

Anyway, this movie has two of the things I (not so) secretly fear will happen in the future: the Singularity, and Johnny Depp with no eyebrows. Depp plays a terminally ill artificial intelligence scientist who uploads his consciousness in the computer. And then bad shit happens–imagine Samantha from Her going all Drew-Barrymore-Firestarter on the world. Naturally, I’ll watch it. –GW
